The word baptism comes from the Greek word BAPTIZO. Before Jesus died on the Cross, getting baptized in water was a ritual used to cleanse people of their sins. After the Cross, baptism was no longer needed to purify believers because we are now covered under the Blood of Christ. Jesus told us,
I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 4:16 NIV
He makes it very clear that He is the only one with the power to save us.
So why get baptized?
Baptism isn’t what saves you, but it is a public proclamation of your faith in Jesus’ ability to save. It’s a way for a new believer to show the world that they are ready to fully commit their lives to Christ. Another way the Greeks defined baptizo is overwhelm”. When you get baptized, you making a declaration of faith: I want to live my life, every day, immersed in the saving Blood of Jesus and overwhelmed by the Holy Spirit.”
The reason we still baptize in water is because of what the water symbolizes. It stands for the Blood of Christ, which is the only thing pure enough to save, and the Holy Spirit, which as a believer should overwhelm you every day so you can live a life devoted to following Christ.
Without Jesus’ self-sacrificing deathand the power and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we would not be able to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
“I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord.” 1 Samuel 1:27 NIV
As Christians, we aim to glorify God in every aspect of our life, including raising our children. Baby dedications are when parents make a public commitment before God to raise their child according to God’s will and teach them the Truths found in His Word.
Parents are not only recognizing God as sovereign over their child, but also over them, as mother and father. Making the conscience decisions that God’s will overrides their own ideas.
“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” Proverbs 22:6 NIV
